BIOHAZARD: Infinite Darkness

OVERVIEW

"Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" is the first CG drama series in the survival horror game "Resident Evil" series, and is distributed on the video distribution service Netflix. Flapper3 was in charge of producing the opening video, monitor graphics (GUI), and some of the graphics for this work.

An opening performance that captures the atmosphere of the film creates a sense of immersion

In response to a request to incorporate scenes and cuts from the main story, we provided total direction for the opening video, from proposing the concept to composing and creating the animation. In order to create the ominous atmosphere that is unique to the series, we selected effective scenes from the vast number of cuts and composed a lowered overall tone. Furthermore, by gradually making changes to the footage in all four episodes, such as adding photos and text that were not in the previous episode, we have devised a way to make the mystery of the story unravel as the story progresses.

In addition, in order to avoid a direct depiction of the virus, we used an animation that looks like ink bleeding to express the virus spreading throughout the world. In this way, we paid particular attention to the details of the production to make it feel like a Resident Evil film, so that you can be immersed in the world of the Resident Evil series from the opening scene.

Taking into account the time period set in the story, a GUI was created that reproduced the technological level of the past.

In addition to the horror elements of zombies and creatures, this is also a suspense drama that incorporates political and military elements. Specialized equipment such as security systems and medical equipment monitors appear in various scenes in the game, including the White House, submarines, military bases, and underground facilities. The graphics for these monitors were also created by flapper3. We proposed everything from the concept to the GUI (Graphical User Interface) design and animation.

Monitor graphics are often used in sci-fi works to create a futuristic look, but this work is set in the 2000s. The production team was required to recreate the technology of the past. To meet this demand, flapper3 started production by gathering materials and data from that time and grasping the characteristics of that era. They paid attention to even the smallest details, such as the font, character size, low resolution, and color usage, and aimed to create a design that would fit in with the historical background of the work.

Graphics that pursue realism with an analogue approach

I was in charge of creating the graphics for the scene in the film where one of the main characters, Claire, records the details of the investigation on a board and walls. I designed the entire scene, from selecting the photos and documents to be posted to their contents, to their placement.

During production, we were conscious of pursuing realism, as if the characters themselves were actually investigating. For example, the letters on the notes pasted on the board were handwritten. By expressing the feel of hastily written letters and the texture of dirty paper, we were able to create a sense of tension and realism in the investigation. In addition, materials such as documents and photographs used in the graphics on the investigation board are also effectively used in the opening video, which adds excitement to the work.
