OVERVIEW

"SiM XR LiVE" was an online live performance by reggae punk band "SiM" that was streamed on September 30, 2022. Flapper3 was in charge of the entire production of this live performance, from planning to direction, production, art direction, and technical direction.

Four different worlds, each with its own unique perspective, created for each song

The set list consisted of four songs. Each song created a different world with its own unique perspective. The first song, "KiLLiNG ME," featured an impactful performance in which the ground rose up. The following song, "Devil in Your Heart," pursued a sense of immersion by moving around inside a Western-style mansion while performing. The third song, "Light it up," featured an overwhelming stage with lights flying all over the place. The angles of the actual and virtual lights were carefully adjusted to achieve realistic lighting.

The Rumbling feat. Attack on Titan

And the fourth song, "The Rumbling." In order to expand the worldview of the music video to the live performance, they created a spectacular stage by incorporating the performance on top of the walls that appear in "Attack on Titan" and while the Titans are marching.

Starting with setting up the stage, the shoot involved many challenges

In order to ensure that there was enough space for all four members to line up and be tall enough to be able to look up at the massive giant, LED panels and various equipment were brought into the motion capture studio and an original stage was set up for this live performance.

They also took on the challenge of special filming using multiple cameras. When using virtual production for filming dramas and the like, it is common to use one camera, but for a live performance, it is necessary to switch between the entire stage and each member's appearance at the intended timing, so seven cameras were set up. Furthermore, various challenges were taken on in order to create the sense of realism that can only be achieved at a live performance, such as applying lighting that changes in real time according to the image.

The production was focused on meticulous simulation. Through repeated testing of things like how the lighting would look and the consistency between real and CG cameras, we were able to create a more immersive live performance. There are still very few examples of online live performances using virtual production. In this context, "SiM XR LiVE" became a project that presented a new world never seen before.
