OVERVIEW

"HATSUNE MIKU EXPO 2023 VR" was an online event for the virtual singer "Hatsune Miku" held in November 2023. This concert was the first to be streamed in VR at "MIKU EXPO," and we handled everything from stage design, live performance direction, VR production, and virtual camera shooting.

Two stages with different atmospheres that are full of realism
The concert, which will last about an hour, will take place on two stages with different atmospheres. Both stages were created with an awareness of the impact they would have when viewed in VR, and the sense of scale and direction that can only be created in a virtual space.

The main stage was created with the theme of the concert in mind, a "toy box." It is an outdoor stage featuring a castle-like set made of stacked building block pieces and a large Ferris wheel. Not only has it recreated a grand space reminiscent of an amusement park, but it also incorporates the scene of the sun setting from evening to night into the performance. A powerful stage was created by carefully adjusting the lighting and electric decorations that change over time, as well as the appearance of the characters.
The stage for the middle part of the concert, which featured a mix of mellow and intense songs, was the underground temple located directly below the main stage. Crystals, a pipe organ and other objects were placed inside to create an indoor stage with a sacred atmosphere. VJ-like effects were also incorporated, such as projecting images onto the crystals. Three special ring-shaped lights were also installed at the top. The angle of the rings was changed for each song, and effects were created to match the atmosphere of the songs, such as a fantastical effect where light poured down from above and intense laser effects.
The performance started on the main stage in the evening, then moved to the sub-stage in the basement, before returning to the main stage towards the end, creating a series of scenes that provided an immersive visual experience.
Numerous manned cameras create a sense of reality
The focus of particular attention at this concert was on camera filming. Seven of the eight cameras, including the drone camera, were manned to capture the realism of the characters and the concert. The drone filming was also operated by a drone operator with extensive on-site experience, resulting in more dynamic camerawork.
In addition, the footage of the band members that appear is not only shot from the front, but also from three angles: 45 degrees to the right and 45 degrees to the left. The footage of the band members is switched to an appropriate angle to match the camera that follows the virtual characters. This mechanism was born from the idea of the flapper3 tech team, who are well versed in systems and programs. By bringing together the knowledge and experience of each member and carrying out repeated testing, we were able to create a concert production that was full of reality.
Various special effects to liven up the stage
This concert incorporated a wealth of special effects, including fireworks, smoke, lasers, and confetti. With an eye on the impact it would have when viewed in VR, the stage was lavishly decorated with lighting and electric lights. The concert was enlivened by a dynamic production that made it seem like an outdoor festival overseas.
Additionally, various elements were incorporated into the concert, such as birdcages and lanterns, that were thought up by fans who participated in crowdfunding. Each request was effectively incorporated into the concert, making it a "concert created together with the fans."
